Attacking via Full Backs

This is a session designed to attack via your full backs/wingbacks and includes a sharp SSG style approach to introduce the topic and required aims before moving into a full size game with coaching points and challenges that bring the full backs into the attack

It is important to work with the full backs in-session to ensure they’re understanding of when to support play and when to make forward runs – what are their cues?

As always, please let me know if you try this session and if it helps to use your full backs when attacking.

Switching Play (Full Session) – Whole-Part-Whole

This is a full coaching session plan for Switching Play based on 22 players (including 2 GK’s). The session begins with a conditioned game, moves into a SSG (2 pitches: 11 players on each: GK’s play as outfield players) and finishes with an unconditioned game.

Conditioned Game (wide players stay in wide channels)
Aim to play to wide channels before/during an attack
Opposite side player (to where possession is) stays wide with Central players rotating to create space (1 player ideally away from play as an outlet)

Challenges to switch in:
– 1 pass
– 2 passes
– 3 passes
When? Why? How?
SSG – 11 players on each pitch x2
5v5+1
3 end goals each end with a middle circle zone
Challenge:
– Switch Play through the middle circle = double your goals
When and how could this be achieved?
Coaching Points:
– Open body to receive and switch
– If not open, can you then set back to switch?
– Limit touches if needed to receive and switch
Aims:
– Score in wide goals = 3pts
– Score in central goal = 1pt
Recognise when to score in goal on opposite side of pitch. Which situations may need this? Why? How?

Encourage previously worked on principles of switching play
Open game, no conditions/constraints but timed: 2×10 minute games

I hope you enjoy this switching play session and can adapt it to suit your own group/numbers/space.

Playing wide to Attack

This session is aimed to focus on combinations, movement off the ball and playing wide to attack. It starts with a technical unopposed session before moving to 2 SSG’s.

It is planned using 16 players, including 2xGK’s.

2 variations, or to be used as a starter and a progression.
Consider: Movement off the ball; Timing of runs; Weight (and aim) of pass.
– Semi-Opposed practice. Previous movement, Weight of Pass, Type of Pass, Choice of Cross/Finish to be worked on with passive pressure.
– 3 Reds combine and play wide (Coach and Players to agree a trigger of when to play wide, i.e. pass limit, through balls etc).
Once shot is taken following the cross, GK starts again by playing to the ‘3’.
– *2 separate games in each half*
– Opposition can place pressure.
SSG to work on the previous coaching points.
